They’re all things that have led to inspiration for me this week. Self belief, ‘can do’ attitudes and creativity.
I went to The Photography Show. An opportunity to get some sage and wise nuggets from industry personalities. The Super Stage welcomed Jasmine Star, US Wedding Photographer. Not actually talking about Wedding Photography, but about how she got started, having barely picked up a camera, and became so successful. My ‘take away’ was – you need a bit of self belief, bucket loads of pushing fear aside and the determination to turn up & get on with it every day.
A massive advocate of the power of social media, Jasmine now has a following of 228K instagrammers!
Also this week, I had the great pleasure to meet Vikie Shanks. She was giving a presentation to a lovely networking group I attended. Vikie has seven children – six have autism spectrum disorders, the seventh is severely dyslexic and the two youngest also have Cerebral Palsy. She has been a single mother since the death of her husband in 2007.
As an author, mentor and speaker, Vikie campaigns to increase awareness of the issues experienced in the education system for people with special needs, works closely with families effected by autism and is an inspirational speaker on motivation and positive thinking. Her ‘can do’ approach has probably been one of the most important factors in the way her amazing children have established their place in the world. It’s impossible to explain in a few short paragraphs why Vikie is such an inspiration. Listen to her TEDx Talk and read some of her blog. You’ll begin to understand what I mean.
I’ve also been inspired by the creativity of others.
My recent obsession with sourdough and artisan bread-making has had me searching for alternative ways of baking with sourdough and wild yeast starters. I’ve come across so many different things people have made. One baker when challenged ‘why go to the trouble and uncertainty of using natural yeast starters’, answered ‘because I can, and I like to experiment’. I like that about baking. A surprising find was a sourdough starter/no butter recipe for biscotti. I’ll report back on how that turns out.
Some lovely discoveries this week via Instagram have been the rather gorgeous, hand painted silk scarves of Agnes Ashe
