Kiwi Adventures – Day 5
Day 5 started at Lake Te Anau after a late night drive back from Milford Sound. The plan was to take the Southern Scenic Route heading for Invercargill on the south coast and on towards Dunedin and the Otago Peninsula. Well that was the plan at the start of the day anyway…
First view of the day, was a very stunning Lake Te Anau in the early morning sunshine, with some great reflections and the cloud just starting to lift over the mountains.
Breakfast stop, Manapouri. A small town with a population of only around 400 permanent residents.
Pahia Point, Coles Bay & Riverton along the windswept southern coast of South Island were our nearest points to Antarctica.
At this stage we left the Southern Scenic Route travelling across country towards Dunedin.
By the time we arrived at Gore we had decided that we had been loving the lakes & mountains more than the desire to see penguins & seals on the Otago Peninsula. So we headed north back up into Central Otago and the fruit farms and amazing autumn colours. We carried on through Roxburgh and Alexandra in the setting sun, ending the day in Cromwell.
Next up. Day 6, Towards the Glaciers.
