Crap Camera Challenge
I recently took part in a competition with a local photography club/group to which I belong. It was, rather endearingly, called the Crap Camera Challenge! The competition was basically to take photos on a disposable camera (supplied to us so that they were all the same) based on the theme ‘The Heart of the City’ which was then handed back to be developed.
For a group of photographers and photography enthusiasts this was much more of a challenge than some of you may understand. Now so used to the instant gratification of digital, the thought of not knowing what the pictures would look like and not even being the first to see them….. Oh dear, palpitations!
Not being based in Birmingham, as the majority of members are, I decided in my case it would be the heart of the ‘Town’ and deciding where to take my photos wasn’t difficult. The heart of Stratford for me really means the river, the theatre, the tourists.
There is a lovely quality to this type of image that is difficult to describe and very hard to replicate with post-processing but I still feel there are very good reasons I love digital photography. I’ve come to a compromise and bought a ‘toy’ lens for my camera. I know it’s not the same as using an old film camera but I’m looking forward to having a bit of fun with it.
